In 1933 a group of immigrants from Germany got together in a home in north Baltimore and started a social club that focused on the benefits of naturism.
In 1934 the Maryland Health Society’s name was chartered in the state of Maryland.
In 1936 the members purchased a 106 acre wooded property in Davidsonville, Maryland, called the Old Mill property which was a grist mill back in the 1800s and turned it into the home of the Maryland Health Society.
In 1938 the first clubhouse and the first three cabins were built as well as a natural spring house to collect water from and bathe in.
The members performed selective clearing for the cabins and utilized all the wood they harvested to build the cabins in the post & beam style of construction. Most of the cabins are today still covered with the original real log siding.
In 1942 the first swimming pool was constructed and was fed from the natural spring.
In the years to follow more cabins were built as well as a new swimming pool and clubhouse with pavilion.
In the 1980s the back section of the property was selectively cleared to create RV sites since travel trailers were becoming the norm for people to travel around in.
Over the years restorations have been occurring to preserve the historical appeal of these original cabins and to include modern day amenities.
In 2012 Cabin # 3 was being renovated and we found newspapers from 1937 that were used as insulation back in the day. The newspapers were in great condition and one of the Headlines read “Amelia Earhart Embarks on Epic Journey”.
In 2018 the clubhouse was fully remodeled to include new full bathrooms with showers, new kitchen cabinets and counter tops and all new flooring and ceilings.
In 2019 the old spring house is undergoing reconstruction to re-establish the original spring bath for members and guests to refresh themselves while 50 degree natural spring water rushes over them on a hot summer day.
Currently we have 24 Cabins, 26 RV sites, 50 tent sites and room to expand for more RV & tent sites.
All of the work building, renovating and maintenance was, and is still, performed today by members of the club volunteering their time and sweat to keep this grand old club vibrant and healthy.
